Tomorrow is Athletics Day! Dress in your whanau colours and remember to have proper running gear, a drink bottle, and a hat.

Also, this term our focus is on Wellbeing and Safety. We have decided to do the ‘Keeping Ourselves Safe’ programme supported by Kerry Fenton, our local community constable. We will run a parent information evening on Tuesday 24 October from 6-7 p.m. in our school staff room to give an overview on the material to be covered through this unit.

Up, Up and Away!

Image
Last week we had some great opportunities and science experiments to help us learn more about aerodynamics! We are loving the science kits from Upper Hutt Science. The science kit last week had an experiment to help us design and test different paper airplanes. We also had the challenge of making an object fly from the ground to the top of the desk.

We were fortunate to have a special visit from Captain George! He taught us more about what makes airplanes fly and demonstrated how air molecules move around the wings of a plane to create lift.

Ultraviolet Rays

Image
We have been learning about solar energy and the sun's ultraviolet rays this week. We tested different brands of sunscreen using UV beads to see which one was most effective. We also learned the importance of wearing sunscreen, even on cloudy days!

Using Our Brains

Image
We have been discussing how we can have a growth mindset instead of a fixed mindset. Instead of:
I made a mistake.
This is too hard.
I give up.

We say:
Mistakes help me to learn better
This may take some time and effort.
I'll use some of the strategies we've learned.

We learned that our brains have different sections that control different body functions. For example, our temporal lobe is in charge of understanding language, hearing, and long term memory.

Whanau Time

Image
Every fortnight we have Whanau Time! We divide into our Whanau Teams (Rata, Mahoe, Kowhai, Kauri) and completed activities based on our value of the term: Compassion/Aroha. Some of the activities we participated in were drama, team building, painting rocks with compassion messages, and making cards for the local rest home.

Welcome to Room 4!

Image
Welcome to Room 4! We are having a great time getting to know each other. We have enjoyed sharing about our families and our interests. Room 4 is learning how to work as a team and try our best at everything we do. Today we each took time to design a new layout for the classroom, so keep your eyes out for some changes!
